with paul ryan. >> first of all, 47% mitt acknowledges himself that was an inarticulate way of describing how we're worried in that stagnant obama economy more people are becoming dependent on economy. >> what could be better for the emotional stability of a presidential candidate than your running mate calling you inarticulate? never mind. paul ryan is the one key numbers guy. so let's hear him explain the tax policy. >> the cut in tax rates is lower -- all american tax rates -- >> how much does it cost? >> it's revenue neutral. >> it's not revenue neutral unless you take away the deductions. the first half, lowering the tax rates. does that cost $5 trillion? >> no, no. look, i won't get into a baseline argument with you. >> you haven't given me the math. >> well, i don't have the time -- it would take me too long to go through all the math. >> all right. you know what, mitt? you better put paul ryan away somewhere. send him to a sports bar somewhere in ohio. at least he can have a few beers with voters. he's got that going for him. who knows, it might help make inroads with that 9% defi

? >> well i think that was his strategy. then he chose paul ryan and they claim to be fiscally conservative people but paul ryan's budget that mitt romney called a marvelous budget would not achieve balance for 30 years. so, they aren't even fiscally responsible. across the board, you know they've run a campaign that has blamed the president, blamed the president. they have no new ideas of their own. they simply want to go back to the bush agenda. more tax cuts for really wealthy people. putting an additional tax burden on working people. and looking down their noses in the most disdainful way, martin. >> yes. >> and i think mitt romney spoke from his heart when he talked about 47% of the american people basically being parasites. >> you are the psychologist, so only you can make a comment about that. but i'm so glad you mentioned paul ryan because he was on the trail today. and he was dispatched to colorado. where he took a question from a woman, who makes $350 every two weeks and cannot get off welfare. here's the conclusion to his rather lengthy insubst

these days, if you notice, they're not talking anymore more about what paul ryan and governor romney are really for. they're spending an awful lot of time telling you what we, barack obama and joe biden are against and what we've done. and they just attack everything. >> the republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan also has a very busy day. congressman ryan is going to have a rally in ohio in just a couple of hours. more on that in just a moment. this morning, though, he was in derry, new hampshire. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and people, it sounded pretty good. but when the rhetoric went aside and the time to act occurred, the ideas are the old ideas that have failed time and again. >> and as we speak, former senator rick santorum is also in ohio, getting ready to stomp for the romney campaign. he is appearing with ohio republican congressman bill johnson who is in a tough reelection race. more on all of this throughout the next hour. but we start -- we start in the buckeye state where paul ryan has the campaign event that we just mentione

matthews in washington. let me start with mr. romney's divorce. why did he pick paul ryan for his running mate? certainly not for better or worse. mitt spends his days and nights acting as if he's out there all alone, that he never hooked up with ryan if the first place. i get it. romney doesn't want to get dragged down by his political mate's push for getting rid of medicare. he acts like ryan has no hold on him, but it's not the way it works. romney has slowly gotten the word that the voter out there thought the two had things worked out, that romney and ryan were in this thing together. well, they're not. romney is dying. he can't stand being tied to ryan, and all that budget cutting baggage of his. for his part, ryan is feeling the taint of having a running mate who is unwilling to stand with him, unwilling to be his kind of politician. a conviction politician. so trouble in paradise. mitt's dying to be single again, so is ryan. we all know that politics makes strange bedfellows but the word is out this pair, romney and ryan, are sleeping in separate rooms. i'm joined by msnbc politic

heard paul ryan say that romney will offer the country a clear choice of two different economic futures. is that what romney needs to do wednesday? is that enough? >> well, i think it would be good to just win the debate. that's my advice to governor romney and it's time to begin panicking a little bit. >> time to begin panicking? but don't worry, governor romney has a solution. zingers. the "new york times" reports that mr. romney's team has concluded that debates are about creating moments and has equipped him with a series of zingers that he has memorized and has been practicing since august. zingers? mr. romney doesn't need zingers. he needs new ideas. he needs a new campaign. truth be told, he needs a new candidate. after all, the guy he's been debating all along has been himself on health care. >> i'm not getting rid of all of health care reform. of course, there are a number of things that i like in health care reform. >> well, of course. i'm going to repeal obama care. i've said that on the campaign trail. i think every single day obama care must be repealed in its entirety. >>

at the convention. >> actual, i think height haosat chance when he picked paul ryan as his running mate. >> absolutely. lynn is absolutely right. >> that's -- that is where that turned. before then, i think it was a referendum on obama's tenure as the lead of our economy. >> right. he had bob portman,e had a perfect chance to win ohio to say i'm a centrist mainstream republican. here i am. i told you people on the right where i stand on things. i'm now not going to pick the most radical, both fis fiscally and in terms of physicalolic guy in washington of any influence. he went to ryan and he stuck with him now and he brought him nothing, ryan. >> charlie crist, a rmepublican and now independent and he does support president obama. governor, goodseyou. rloi wl as lynn's and let's talk about this selection of paul ryan. you come from a state obviously with a very large older population, key voting bloc. they vote in big percentages. did he buy into, my choosing ryan, the medicare plan which now inve swing staho not just that people favor president obama's approach but they favor it by dou

romney heading back out on the campaign trail. joining running mate paul ryan in the battleground state of ohio this afternoon. chief political correspondent carl cameron traveling with the governor live in new york city right now. carl, was it expected mitt romney would start the day on foreign policy? >> reporter: well, sure. clinton global initiative virtually guaranteed that. after the terror attacks in benghazi that left the u.s. ambassador dead the mr. romney was clear he would give additional foreign policy speeches in today's speech in front. cgi. we can expect him toe be particularly critical are president for what romney has said has been an inadequate assertion of american values overseas during this mounting violence across the middle east and north africa. this morning at this event with president clinton mr. romney joked about how nice it is occasionally to have introduction from bill clinton and suggested he will wait for the bounce. a reference to the one that president obama got after the democratic national convention insofar clinton's speech was the one best received

middle class tax cut message and i think vice presidential candidate paul ryan has been listening to a few things i have had to say. take a watch. >> growth tax reform, it cuts tax rates by 20%, more take home pay for the middle class. that right there creates about 7 million jobs. >> sit enough, though? does mitt romney get it? our kudlow congress is going to come back in session and see if nick can make the break through. >>> welcome back to the kudlow report, i'm larry kudlow, in this half hour, hold your breath. if bush tax cuts are not extended, watch those popular home short sales being stopped short. that's very important, could cause a wave in foreclosures and another wave in the journey turn in housing. and if that doesn't scare you, it's the first monday in october. and the key issues this year, affirmative action, same sex action, will the john roberts supreme court continue to reshape the country in a liberal or conservative direction? that's what we need to know. 36 days remaining until the election, sometime for some tough love on tax policies. paul ryan appeared on

day! what's in your wallet? here's your invoice. >>> mitt romney and paul ryan have just concluded one of the busiest days of their campaign in one of the most important states in this election, but sadly it may be a little too late. because polls show that with exactly six weeks until the election, ohio is no more ready to vote for romney than it was a year ago. and thatself other swing states are also starting to line up behind the president. joining us now from california, former u.s. secretary of labor and professor at berkeley, professor of economics no less, robert reich, author of a new book, "beyond outrage." here in new york is my colleague krystal ball. just a few moments ago a rather tired and disheveled romney was speaking to a few supporters. take a listen to this. >> wait a second, wait a second. romney/ryan, romney/ryan, there we go. that's great. >> he's having to introduce them there to his name and his running mate's name. >> they were getting the hang of it. >> it was good. it's a bit of a problem though, isn't it, because some of his advisers are actually saying the

making in this campaign. >> now paul ryan has his own secret tape about the 30% who want welfare. >>> and eric cantor and the tea party strutted into washington two years ago pushing radical ideas. now they're hiding from their far right agenda. too bad we won't let them. >>> and this race has been the tale of two mitts, but only can show up for tomorrow night's debate. you're watching "politicsnation" on msnbc. snoou. >>> mitt romney has been preparing for the debate by debating a republican senator, who's playing the part of president obama. yeah. meanwhile, president obama has been preparing for romney by debating an atm machine. ally bank. why they're always there to talk. i love you, james. don't you love me? i'm a robot. i know. i know you're a robot! but there's more in you than just circuits and wires! uhhh. (cries) a machine can't give you what a person can. that's why ally has knowledgeable people there for you, night and day. ally bank. your money needs an ally. >>> have you checked us out on facebook? the "politicsnation" nation conversation is going around the clock.

points there. he first went after representative paul ryan the gop vice-presidential candidate and his budget proposals. that said he's also going after medicare. given the demographic makeup of the sunshine state, which has a large already older population, it becomes no surprise that the latest polls show the president with a lead in the sunshine state. now at the same time paul ryan is campaigning himself in new hampshire today. the republican vice-presidential nominee met with voters in the city of derry just a short time ago. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and people -- it sounded pretty good. but when the rhetoric went aside and the time to act occurred, the ideas are the old ideas that have failed time and again. >> as for mitt romney, he spent some time in pennsylvania on friday. and despite trailing the president as much as ten points in some polls, governor romney made this bold prediction. >> it is an honor to be here with you and to be here with these cadets and to be at this extraordinary place that so many presidents past have visited. and

:00 a.m. in the west. a new reaction today from paul ryan. >> we have had some missteps. but at the end of the day, the choice is really clear. and we're giving people a very clear choice. we have these pro growth solutions for opportunity and upward mobile and a dynamic economy. you've got the president basically promising four more years like the last four years. and here and there. we have not been able to frame that choice clearly. by the end of the day, people are not going to understand exactly what they have got. >> a voluntary campaign senior advisor is seeking to clarify the president's plan even after the currency of the economy. >> the president's not ga qualifiesed. we have now created 5 million jobs, we're net positive in terms of jobs created. but whole is huge, and we have to create an commit in which the middle class has a chance. we're not going to get back there by getting back to the same policies we have had before. >> the des moines register poll shows a four-point lead in ohio. in ohio the president is currently ahead in -- >>> president obama boarded air force one

by choosing paul ryan as his vice president? >> yeah. >> do you think he picked paul ryan because is he african-american or because he is qualified? >> it could be a little bit of both. >> at howard stern crew interviews some african-americans who don't seem to know anything. was that fair? adam can a roll low will weigh in. >> bill: caution, you are about to enter the no spin zone. the factor begins right now. hi, i'm bill o'reilly. on 60 minutes last night the president and governor romney did not say anything new. but it was the way they said what they said that was most interesting. the president looked a little jumpy especially when steve cross started ticking off things that he has promised to do but has not con. mr. obama maintaining the desperate economy changed all of his plans. meantime mitt romney looked a bit more authoritative even when dodging the question. >> i will not lower the share of taxes paid by high income individuals. and i will make sure that we bring down rates, we limit deductions and exemptions so we can keep the -- in the code and encourage growth in the job

. the reason i said that was because by picking paul ryan, it opened up that argument of the republican party as extreme and the democrats just pounced on that as you would expect them to do. and the country does not want those extreme aspects of the republican party, those extreme right wing policies. they do realize that's what got us into this trouble both overseas with the war in iraq and also with the economy. and they are not going for it anymore. the republic no longer believes that the way to help middle class and low-income families is to give more money to the rich. so i thought that mitt romney would pivot to the middle. he decided not to do that. >> i feel like the country republicans people in the middle and on the left want a republican party that's essentially giving a good fight. so we can have a big hashed out discussion about how to fix our problems. i'll be talking more about that later in the show about something that's been left out of the campaign. but i think even the left is rooting for the republican party to get its act together. >> because we don't want one party. w

're done." just about everybody in republican politics, from mitt romney and paul ryan, all the way down to thscott browns of the world called for todd akin to gut of that missouri naac w m ari before the republican convention, but now, apparently, now we know how much time outrage wears off in. now republicans have decided they're over all of their concerns about todd akin. here he is doing a press conference last week with newt gingrich. newt gingrich there showg hi sut toki today republican senator jim demint and former presidential candidate rick santorum threw their support behind todd akin. republican senator roy blunt, remember him? the guy who said todd akin has to get out. he put out a statement today saying that now is supporting todd akin. thstatrepuicar tsbout akin after his comments about some rapes being legitimate last month, they now say they're all in for todd akin as well. even the national republican party's sete campaign committee, the guys who said we're done when they were talking about todd aki apparently they are thinking now of not bnge with him anore. so now we

and paul ryan have all seen fit to weigh in on this one football game from monday, on the referees issue. all three men saying that the green bay packers deserve to win that game. the packers got robbed. so even as the packers' agony crossed over into national politics this week, i still have to say that it remains true that the single west political green bay packers moment in history, the best moment of all time in the overlap that exists between the green bay packers and politics is still this moment. >> there are 30 teams, but only one packer organization, and that is the greatest football organization ever in america's history. there are only 187 days before training camp. and 360 days before we go back to miami! whereas the packers are america's real team, and we'll always be winners in the hearts and minds of the people of wisconsin, therefore i, tommy thompson, governor of the great state of wisconsin, do hereby proclaim january 27th, 1998, all over wisconsin, green bay packer day in honor of all of you, the fans! congratulations. thank you. >> tommy thompson, from the great stat

the paul ryan budget, calling it marvelous, voucher rising medicare. these are wildly unpopular policies that he has stood for and he may not be willing but the democrats are happy to fill in those detail and it's his ideas at the core. >> aside from the politics and the polls -- and we'll go through some of those numbers, i think that when americans hear the choices of the perspective and world view, the big picture view of each candidate, they begin making basic decisions. the reason that 47% tape i think was so powerful against romney is it gave a world view of how he sees the country. >> right. >> and i think that's why we started seeing a whole shift in these polls. >> yeah, i think that's right, reverend. the mask thing by itself is not just positive because we have to remember that there were more george w. bush masks sold in 2000 and al gore actually won that election. so i'm not sure that we can be entirely sure there but it is one kernel there and that's where people are actually focused the most because they are seeing the ads, they are seeing the candidates and hearing the me

at ease with the polls. cue paul ryan moments ago. here he is. >> are you troubled by the wisconsin polls? and they're just polls and you always remind me of that. for a while it looked like you could take that state. just a snapshot of the moment but trailing further in that state. >> i don't actually believe the validity of that poll. i won't get into all the methodologies of it. >> which would he believe in? >> one that has him ahead. that's the one he would believe in. the reality is there's a serious thing about polling in that it does matter what your sample is and it matters the sample size and it also matters the weighting, whether you have how many more democrats than republicans. but underlying the problem for mitt romney is that republican voter identification is dropping, so the polls do have to reflect a weighting that says that there are fewer republicans than there are democrats and there are more independents. it's because there's less identification with the republican party in the country. so if the polls are trending away from mitt romney, it's two things. number one, h

in defense cuts that his running mate paul ryan voted for, he implied that would hurt suicide prevention programs for veterans even though the v.a. would be exempt from that, so i'm not sure he even understood what it was he was talking about. but at least he tried. at least veterans got a mention from him. even if it didn't make sense in policy terms. you do know that defense and veterans are two different -- at some point it should be possible with 40 days left to say veterans have to be more than just an applause line. right? you don't just get to use them for a photo op like the decommissioned battleship you used as a backdrop when you introduced paul ryan inexplicably in front of a battleship, another time when you didn't mention the war. even if you're not willing to talk about the war we are in that you would be taking over, veterans are not a hypothetical construct. the way they're treated is not an esoteric consequence of how we feel about them as a nation or how much military spending we have which is how mitt romney described it today. 40 days out from the election with the is

to understand where we actually stand. >> paul ryan is in new hampshire today. the republican vice presidential nominee will hold a rally in the city of derry in just a few hours. meanwhile, vice president biden is in the battleground state of florida. he's going to attend a campaign event in fort myers this morning. on friday he met with seniors at a retirement village in boca raton. >> governor romney's plan goes into effect it can mean that everyone, every one of you, would be paying more on -- taxes on your social security. >> michelle obama is encouraging young voters to get to the polls. like right now. the first lady spoke to college students in iowa friday, urging them to go into nearby early voting booths to cast their ballots. >> you got a whole month to make it happen. a whole month to vote! as i tell my children, don't procrastinate. no procrastination. make it happen. do it today. >> joining me now, political reporter for "the washington post" felicia somnez and white house correspondent for the hill, amy barnes. good morning. >> good morning. >> so, amy, i'm going to start with yo

, but the senator from ohio or paul ryan or tim pawlenty, i do not think any of them fundamentally alter the race, and i also think we have to be careful not to put too much weight on any payback in terms of deciding the overall race. i do not think sarah palin helped john mccain, but i do not think anyone he picked held that election. people are going to vote for the person who is going to be president of the united states. can the vice president held? yes, but i think we overblow it, thinking it is going to alter the broad base. -- broad base. tavis: what is your sense of whether there is an international issue that might change this race? >> i always say if something they have been in existence, and you live with that uncertainty. that being said, i do not think that winds up being a new issue for most voters. i would say if you look at previous elections, a foreign- policy rises to the back burner issue. only times of relative domestic tranquillity as the economy seem to be doing well. other times foreign policy does not make it to the back burner. doesn't matter a little biscuits? sure, but
